Differences Between Pharmaceutical Intermediates And API

- May 15, 2018 -

Pharmaceutical intermediates are actually some chemical raw materials or chemical products used in pharmaceutical synthesis process. This kind of chemical product can produce in the chemical factory without medicine production license, as long as reaches some grade, may use in the synthesis of the medicine.

"API" refers to the raw material drugs used in the production of various kinds of preparations. They are the active components of the preparations. They are prepared by chemical synthesis, plant extraction or biotechnology, and are used as medicinal powders, crystals, extracts, etc. But the patient cannot take the substance directly.

We can see from the definition, The pharmaceutical intermediate is a fine chemical raw material , although the name carries ( medicine ) two words , it does not belong to the pharmaceutical industry. However, API is the main raw material and the active ingredient of preparation. But the raw material medicine and the finished product medicine also have the difference, the finished product medicine may directly give the patient to take, but the raw material medicine cannot. In other words, the API is the main component of the finished product, and the API only produces the finished product after the reaction can be used for the patient to use. So the finished product is the final form of the pharmaceutical intermediate and the API.
