Ertapenem is a new carbapenem antibiotic. By binding with penicillin binding protein (PBP), it interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall, resulting in the inhibition of bacterial growth and reproduction, and the dissolution of a few cells. Ertapenem has high antimicrobial activity against methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes and other gram-positive bacteria. Neisseria meningitidis highly sensitive to ertapenem, but resistant to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter. Ertapenem is stable to most penicillin.
