Meldrum;s acid is mainly used in the synthesis of meropenem. Meropenem is a synthetic broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic, which produces antibacterial effect by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell wall. Meropenem can easily penetrate the cell walls of most gram-positive and negative bacteria and reach its target of penicillin binding protein (PBPSN). With the exception of metal β -lactamases, the hydrolysis of most β -lactamases (including penicillin and cephalosporinase produced by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria) was stable. Meropenem is not suitable for the treatment of methicillin-resistant
